Kitchener is perhaps most well known for his commanding image which was utilised for an army recruitment campaign in 1914. The posters, which feature Kitchener pointing at the viewer above the words ‘WANTS YOU’, became one of the most iconic and enduring images from the First World War.

Similar posters and slogans were later recreated for other countries, including J.M. Flagg’s famous 1917 ‘Uncle Sam’ recruitment posters for the US Army.
