North Aisle Burials

Fulk de Saundford

Fulk de Saundford was one of the first Anglo-Norman Archbishops of Dublin and the first to buried in this Cathedral. He ordered the construction of the Lady Chapel, the space to the right of here, in 1270. He died a year later and is buried in the tomb below. His brother John, who served as Dean of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral (1275-84) and Archbishop of Dublin, may also be buried in this tomb.

Friedrich Herman Graf von Schönberg

One of the most successful mercenaries of his day, Friedrich Herman von Schönberg fought with the Swedish, Dutch, French and Prussian armies before pledging his support to William of Orange. When Schönberg was killed at the Battle of the Boyne, many viewed him as a fallen hero. After unsuccessfully petitioning Schönberg’s family to erect a monument in his memory, Dean Jonathan Swift arranged for this memorial in 1731. The Dean wrote its Latin inscription, which ends: “The renown of his valour had greater power among strangers than had the ties of blood among his kith and kin”.
