Irish Memorial Book

The book on display here is part of an eight part volume which lists Irish men and women who died in World War One. It contains 49,647 names in alphabetical order.

The borders of the pages were illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke. This list was compiled in 1923 by the Committee of the Irish National War Memorial and 100 copies were printed.

These records are unique: not only do they record the names, rank, regiment, date of death and regimental number of the dead, but in many cases a soldier’s place of birth. These provide a valuable insight into the loss of life caused by the war. Cathedral staff turn the pages in these books from time to time so that different names are visible.
